Species

Angiosperms > Gentianales > Rubiaceae > Rytigynia

Characteristics

Shrub or subshrub 0.6–1.5 m. tall, with slender stems from a woody rootstock, densely spreading pubescent when young, becoming glabrescent and older stems covered with dark red-brown ± peeling bark.. Leaves mostly paired but frequently in whorls of 3; blades elliptic, oblong or ± ovate, 1.7–8.5(–11) cm. long, 0.8–5(–6) cm. wide, shortly pubescent above, velvety woolly beneath with tangled adpressed grey hairs which almost or completely obscure the surface but main venation clearly evident when dry; petiole 4–7 mm. long; stipules joined to form a short sheath 1.5–2.5 mm. long, densely pilose within near node; appendages subulate, 2–3 mm. long.. Cymes short, 1–5-flowered; peduncles (1–)2–4 mm. long; pedicels (0.5–)2–6 mm. long, both ± spreading pubescent; bracts and bracteoles ± obsolete.. Calyx pubescent; tube campanulate or globose, 1–1.5 mm. long; limb-tube very short; lobes linear-lanceolate, 1.5–4 mm. long.. Buds acuminate.. Corolla white, cream or yellow; tube 2–4.5 mm. long, glabrous or with a few scattered hairs outside, with a ring of deflexed hairs inside; lobes triangular, 2.5–4 mm. long, 1–2 mm. wide, apiculate.. Anthers purple-brown, half-exserted, with rather distinct connective appendages.. Ovary 2-locular; style exserted ±1.5 mm., the stigmatic club green, 1 mm. long.. Fruit black, didymous, usually only one per cyme developing, ± 1 cm. long and wide, 4 mm. thick, with 2 pyrenes, crowned by calyx-teeth and pedicel lengthening to 9 mm.
