Shrub or small tree to 2.4 m. tall; branches glabrous, the branchlets lenticellate, with mostly pale brown or chestnut bark which peels to reveal a grey or grey-brown surface, probably sometimes ± powdery.. Leaf-blades oblong?-elliptic to elliptic, 6.5–18 cm. long, 2.5–9 cm. wide, acuminate at the apex, cuneate to sometimes rounded at the base, glabrous save for barbellate domatia in nerve-axils beneath but these maybe reduced or almost absent; petioles 4–7 mm. long; stipulesjoined to form basal sheath 2–3.5 mm. long, becoming accrescent and ± triangular, densely pilose inside, with compressed ultimately deciduous subulate appendage 5–6 mm. long.. Inflorescences subumbellate or with secondary branches slightly developed, 7–16-flowered; peduncle, 4–6 mm. long, with paired ovate bracts 1.5 mm. long; pedicels 2.5–6 mm. long.. Buds ovoid, rounded or very slightly acuminate.. Calyx-tube 1 mm. long, the limb 0.3 mm. long, scarious, minutely denticulate.. Corolla green, glabrous; tube campanulate, 2.5–3 mm. long, with a row of deflexed hairs inside below the throat; lobes narrowly triangular, 2–3 mm. long with vestigial appendage.. Ovary 3–4-locular; style 4.5 mm. long, slightly swollen at base, exserted; stigmatic club coroniform, sulcate, 4-lobed at the apex, 1.25 mm. wide.. Fruits subglobose, 7–8 mm. long, 9–11 mm. wide, often with only 2 pyrenes developed; pedicels up to 1.2 cm. long.
