Characteristics

Leaves held in one plane, 2–10.5 × 0.8–3.5 cm, oblong, narrowly long-acuminate at the apex, rounded and sometimes somewhat subcordate at the base, discolorous, thinly or densely pubescent with pale hairs on both surfaces, costa with ferruginous hairs on both surfaces and the c. 5 lateral nerves reddish beneath contrasting with glaucous-green blade; petiole 2–6 mm long, hairy like the stems; stipule-sheath 1.5 mm long, ferruginous-pubescent, ± persistent, with oblong-lanceolate glabrous appendage 3–4 mm long, soon deciduous.

Corolla acuminate and with distinct tails in bud; tube 2–2.5 mm long, with upper part ferruginous-pubescent, inside with a ring of deflexed hairs; lobes 3–4 mm long, triangular-lanceolate, with long filiform appendages 2–2.5 mm long.
Shrub or tree 1.5–4 m tall (or climber fide Nawa et al. 140); branches dark reddish-brown or blackish, densely covered with ± spreading ferruginous hairs when young, later ± glabrous.
Flowers solitary, or in 2-flowered cymes; peduncles 1–1.5 mm long; pedicels c. 2 mm long; bracts up to 3 mm long, filiform, all parts densely ferruginous-pubescent.
Fruit 10–12 mm in diameter, globose but 3–6-lobed when dry, glabrous; pyrenes 8 mm long with a pitted-reticulate surface.
Calyx tube 1.5 mm long, obconic, ferruginous-pubescent; limb c. 0.5 mm long, with distant teeth under 0.5 mm long.
Pollen presenter coroniform, sulcate, deeply 5-lobed at the apex.
Style 4–5 mm long.
