Characteristics

A perennial glabrous herb with a more or less tufted and often cushion-like habit, the branches up to 4 or 6 cm. long.. Leaves narrowly linear or somewhat subulate, acute, mucronulate, 0.4–1 cm. long.. Flowers most often embedded in the cushions amongst the leafy branches and on short or very short pedicels, when the branches are somewhat elongated the pedicels are generally longer and up to 1.6 cm. long.. Sepals 4–5, ovate, adaxially concave, rounded at apex, 1.7–3.3 mm. long.. Petals absent (in the flowers dissected).. Capsule equalling but not exceeding the persistent sepals.. Seeds somewhat irregular in outline but often more or less asymmetrically reniform, 0.5–0.65 mm. broad, almost smooth or very slightly rugulose or reticulated, more or less shining.
