Characteristics

Robust, glabrous. Emerged leaves erect, oblong-lanceolate, acute, gradually narrowed towards the base, thickish, pale green, 20-60 by 6-20 cm; phyllodes linear; nerves 5-11 of which 4-10 arise from the midrib, prominent beneath, connected by c. 1 mm spaced, parallel veins under an angle of 60-70°; petiole robust, 50-80 cm, blunt-triangular, ribbed, with air-channels, in sicco prominent septations spaced 3-4 mm; sheath broad. Peduncle hollow, ribbed, incl. the raceme 1-2.5 m. Raceme consisting of 3-12 whorls of 3 flowers, the lower 1-4 whorls female, the others male; occasionally a few branches from the lowest whorl. Bracts more or less connate at the base, 8-20 mm, oblong to broad-triangular, very acute towards the apex, thickish, parallel-striped. Pedicels in 9 2½-7½ cm, ascending, slender. Sepals ovate, thickened, 8-12 mm, recurved after anthesis. Petals obovate, white, c. 16-25 mm. Stamens oo; filaments hairy, filiform, slightly thickened at the base, 3-4 mm; anthers oblong, 1½-2 by ⅓-½ mm. Carpels ∞, elliptic, dorsally and ventrally with a searious wing, incl. the style c. 1 mm; style ⅓-½ mm, apical, thick; stigma punctiform. Achenes obovate to falcate with a broad dorsal, a narrow ventral, and 2 lateral wings, 1 1/5 — 2¼ by 0.8-1.1 mm; beak obliquely attached, thick, 0.5 mm. Seed red-brown, c. 1 mm.
More
Erect emersed aquatic; lvs lanceolate or ovate, 12–35 × 1–10 cm, without basal lobes; scape 5–20 dm, with 4–10 whorls of fls, sometimes branching at the lowestwhorl, the upper fls staminate on filiform pedicels 2–3 cm, the lower pistillate on stouter, ascending pedicels 1–1.5 cm; bracts oblong-ovate, obtuse or acute, somewhat boat-shaped, 0.5–1.5 cm, evidently, copiously, and irregularly papillate-roughened or somewhat corrugate-ridged on the back; sep reflexed, oblong-ovate, 3–6 mm, roughened like the bracts; pet 8–15 mm; stamens 12–30, the filaments slender, linear, longer than the anthers, roughened with minute scales; achenes 1.5–2.3 mm; narrowly obovate to often falcate, with marginal wings only, or with 1 or 2 poorly developed facial wings, sometimes with a resin-duct on each face; beak broad-based, obliquely ascending, 0.3–0.7 mm; 2n=22. In shallow water and swamps; near the coast from Del. to Fla., Tex., Mex., W.I., and n. S. Amer. Our plants, as here described, are var. media Micheli. (S. falcata) Typical S. lancifolia is mainly tropical and subtropical.
Plants emersed or partially submerged, 4-20 dm. tall. Leaves erect or ascend-ing, lanceolate to elliptic, attenuate at base and apex, 1-4 dm. long, usually shorter than the elongate petioles. Inflorescences usually longer than the leaves, simple or branched, bearing few to numerous whorls of flowers; pedicels ascending, 1.5-3.0 cm. long; sepals ovate, 0.6-1.0 cm. long, reflexed in fruit; petals 0.8-1.3 cm. long, white.
