Perennial herb, up to 0.5 m high; woody at base; stems ascending, glabrous below, glabrous to sparingly pubescent above. Leaves petiolate, Sub-Entire or lyrate-pinnatifid, broadly elliptic to ovate in outline, 25-50 x 15-30 mm, margins coarsely crenate; upper surface subglabrous, lower surface sparingly pubescent. Inflorescence simple; verticillasters up to 10, spaced below, denser above, each 2-8-flowered. Calyx sparingly hispid, tubular-campanulate, up to 10 mm long in fruit. Corolla: tube 18 mm long; upper lip 3 mm long. Flowering time Nov.-Mar.
Like S. aurita but stems and leaves almost glabrous above, corolla 20-25 mm long, blue, mauve or reddish.
