Characteristics

Scarcely aromatic, perennial herb. Stems densely hairy and with glandular scales, to c. 50 cm high; angles often purple. Lvs mostly basal and forming a rosette; petioles to c. 8 cm long, densely hairy and with glandular scales. Lamina 3-12 × 1.5-5 cm, ± oblong, sinuately lobed or pinnatifid, hairy on veins, otherwise glabrous or nearly so; base broad-cuneate to subcordate; apex acute or subacute; lobes broader than deep, dentate. Stem lvs often sessile. Infl. to 30 cm long, usually with 2 main branches near base, densely hairy. Verticels 5-10-flowered, distant; fls ± subsessile; bracts broader than long, > calyx, with narrow-acuminate apex. Calyx 6-10 mm long, purplish, hairy, accrescent; teeth acuminate, densely ciliate, those of lower lip much longer; lower lip 3-4 mm long, ± rounded. Corolla 8-12 mm long; limb blue or violet; upper lip hooded, hairy outside. Stamens included or slightly exserted; connective of fertile arms 4-5× filaments; sterile arms very broad. More
Perennial, probably short-lived, with stems arising from a woody taproot; stems erect, 0.15-0.4 m tall, densely glandular-villous with long spreading hairs and shorter gland-tipped hairs. Leaves mainly a dense basal rosette, shortly petiolate to subsessile, blade irregularly to deeply pinnatifid or sometimes almost entire, usually oblong to ovate-oblong in outline, 40-130 x 10-30 mm, rugose and usually densely pubescent and gland-dotted below, margin often eroso-dentate. Inflorescence usually branched with many verticils, spaced below and denser above; verticils usually 6-flowered. Calyx pilose and gland-dotted, densely villous in the throat, up to 8 mm long in fruit. Corolla light blue to purple, 8-12 mm long; tube 4-8 mm long; upper lip often slightly falcate, 2-4 mm long, lower lip usually slightly shorter.
Perennial herb, 0.15-0.40 m high; taproot woody; glandular-villous. Inflorescence branched with many verticillasters, spaced below, denser above, each 6-flowered. Flowers light blue to purple. Calyx pilose, gland-dotted, villous in throat, up to 8 mm long in fruit. Corolla: tube 4-8 mm long; upper lip often slightly falcate, 2-4 mm long; lower lip shorter. Flowering time Sept.-Mar.
Perennial herb, 0.15-0.40 m high. Stems erect, densely glandular-villous with long, spreading hairs and shorter gland-tipped hairs. Leaves in a dense, basal rosette; blade oblong to ovate-oblong, 40-130 x 10-30 mm, margins irregularly to deeply pinnatifid, sometimes almost entire. Flowers: verticils 6-flowered; calyx 7-9 mm long, upper lip with 3 closely connivent, short teeth, pilose and gland dotted, densely villous in throat; corolla 8-12 mm long, upper lip of corolla straight or slightly falcate, light blue to purple; Sep.-Mar.
An erect herb. It keeps growing from year to year. It has a stout taproot. It grows 60-100 cm high. The leaves are oval and 10 cm long. The edges are wavy. The flowers are blue-violet. There are 6 almost in a ring. The outer ring of flower parts is tinged with purple and covered with hairs. The petals have an upper part with 2 lobes and a lower part with 3 lobes.
Like S. disermas but leaves usually with ± deeply dissected margins, corolla shorter (8-12 mm long), light blue to purple, with upper lip almost straight.
Another European weed, commonly with lobed or toothed lvs, the cor 1 cm, with the upper lip nearly straight, is rare with us and probably not persistent.
Like S. runcinata but upper lip of calyx with teeth connivent.
