Savannosiphon Goldblatt & Marais

Genus

Angiosperms > Asparagales > Iridaceae

Characteristics

Perennial with small globose corms with membranous to fibrous tunics. Leaves few, the lower 2-3 entirely sheathing (cataphylls); foliage leaves lanceolate, lightly plicate, only the lowermost basal and attached to the stem near ground-level, upper foliage leaves cauline and smaller. Stem compressed and winged, unbranched. Inflorescence a spike; bracts green, fairly large. Flowers white, actinomorphic, with a long perianth-tube; tepals subequal or the dorsal somewhat hooded. Stamens included in the tube, unilateral, pressed against the adaxial part of the tube. Style included in the tube, filiform, 3-branched, the branches deeply divided and recurved. Capsules oblong, coriaceous, showing the outline of the seeds. Seeds several per locule, globose, hard, ± smooth. For a long time included in Lapeirousia on account of its deeply divided style-branches, the genus seems isolated taxonomically. Its round-based corms do not accord with the flat-based, campanulate corms with hard, often woody tunics of Lapeirousia. Nevertheless, it seems most closely related to that widespread African genus.
