Characteristics

Herb 15–120 cm. tall, with a rhizomatous bulb.. Petioles forming a false stem 5–60 cm. long; leaf-blade lanceolate to ovate, acute to acuminate or obtuse, basally attenuate to subcordate; leaves appear during or after flowering.. Scape 12–75 cm. long; false stem and scape often spotted brown-red to dark violet.. Involucral bracts drooping and withering early, lanceolate to linear, up to 6 cm. long and less than 1.5 cm. broad, colourless or tinged with red.. Inflorescence semiglobose to globose, ± 10–200-flowered.. Pedicels (1–) 1.5–4.5 (–6.5) cm. long.. Perianth, filaments and style scarlet, turning more pink when fading, segments often paler than filaments.. Perianth-tube cylindrical, 0.4–2.6 cm. long; segments spreading, linear, 1.2–3.2 cm. long, 0.5–5 mm. broad, (1–)3(–5)-nerved.. Filaments filiform, 1.5–4.2 cm. long at anthesis; anthers 1–3 mm., red or yellow.. Berries 0.5–1 cm. in diameter.
