Characteristics

Erect woody perennial herb to shrub, up to 0.5-2.5 m high, usually laxly branching, stem strongly to faintly striate, usually densely pubescent but occasionally glabrous. Leaves alternate, distinctly petiolate, petiole spreading pubescent, petiole c. 0.5 mm wide at point of attachment with lamina widening to 2-3 mm wide below axil, lamina elliptic, ovate or circular, 12-40 mm long, 11-45 mm wide sparsely pubescent, pubescence above and below sufficiently sparse to see leaf surface, lower lamina with dense orange glands, margin coarsely serrated, sometimes shallowly dissected into lobes, each lobe or tooth apex hardened, leaf base cuneate to truncate to cordate, leaf venation impressed above and raised below, lower venation drying pale with spreading hairs pubescence. Inflorescences of numerous clustered capitula, capitula pedicellate, pedicel 2-20 mm long, densely spreading pubescent, hairs drying white-yellow; occasionally with one or two separate alternate bracts length 0.5-1.5 mm long, bracts abaxially pubescent Capitula discoid, homogamous; involucre broadly and shallowly campanulate, 2-7 mm in diam.; phyllaries 15-30, multiseriate, 0.5-1 mm wide, 1.5-2.5 mm long, often with a hyaline apex, phyllaries often abaxially pubescent with spreading hairs drying yellow; receptacle steeply conical at maturity, 1.5-2 mm diam., 8-14 outer florets in each capitulum stalked, stalk c. 0.3 mm long, c. 0.2 mm diam. Florets hermaphrodite, 20-55, corollas yellow, tube 1.5-2.5 mm long, c. 0.6 mm diam., distinction between tube and throat inconspicuous; lobes c. 0.4 mm long, acute and slightly inturned forming a hood; anthers drying white, apical anther appendages acute or rounded; basal anther appendages very short and triangular, anther collars inconspicuous and coloured white. Mature achenes c. 2 mm long, c. 1 mm wide, with pale wings, densely glandular, setulae usually dense although sometimes absent; pappus absent.
