Robust, tufted perennial, up to 0.5 m high. Leaves reduced to 2 or 3 sheaths. Culms soft, 2-4 mm in diameter below the inflorescence. Flowers: in a panicle with clusters of spikelets on unequal branches; glumes 1.8-2.6 mm long, usually uniform above the basal smaller ones, pale whitish yellow or pale green with dark brown inverted V each side of keel; anther including crest 0.4-0.7 mm long; style 3-cleft. Fruit a 3-sided, transversely wrinkled nutlet.
