Characteristics

Trees or shrubs, with simple or compound opposite leaves; leaflets entire. Flowers often fairly large, in corymbose-paniculate inflorescences, hermaphrodite, often heterostyled. Calyx campanulate or campanulate-cupulate, usually irregularly or obscurely dentate. Corolla infundibuliform, with a well-developed tube and spreading lobes which are barbate with dull or purple hairs on at least part of the upper surface. Stamens 2, affixed to the throat of the corolla by short filaments. Ovary bilocular, usually 4 pendulous ovules in each loculus; style filiform, generally not exceeding the tube; stigma bifid. Fruit a hard woody, sometimes very thickly woody, loculicidal capsule with two loculi.
