Ovary bilocular, with 4 ovules per loculus; style slender; stigma exserted or included, subcapitate or cylindrical.
Stamens 2, inserted at or near the mouth of the corolla tube; filaments short, anthers introrse.
Leaves opposite, simple or compound, petiolate, glabrous or hairy; acarodomatia absent.
Inflorescences few– to many–flowered, cymose; flowers heterostylous, scented.
Seeds endospermous, with a long subapical wing, spinning during dispersal.
Fruit a woody bilocular capsule with loculicidal dehiscence.
Calyx campanulate, truncate or obscurely lobed.
