Characteristics

Slender-stemmed shrub to 3 m tall, sometimes straggling; young branches puberulous or sericeous-puberulous. Leaves slightly to strongly aniso-phyllous, densely ciliate along both sides of midrib (rarely only puberulous) beneath, otherwise subglabrous, puberulous along midrib above; petiole up to 8(-15) mm long; lamina elliptic (rarely ovate or obovate), largest 1.5-6(-7) x 0.7-3.2 cm; margin entire or irregularly and grossly dentate; apex subacute to rounded or with a short obtuse tip. Flowers not scented, axillary, supported by ordinary leaves, widely scattered, (rarely two together near tip of stems); pedicels 0.5-1.5 mm long, glabrous (rarely puberulous), winged. Bracteoles 4-6 mm long, dark green or dark brown, usually yellowish brown towards margins, glossy, ovate to oblong or broadly so, obtuse and apiculate to truncate, with scarious sometimes slightly frayed margins, sparsely puberulous along midrib (rarely glabrous). Sepals subequal, 6-9.5 mm long, ovate-oblong, coloured as bracteoles (straw-coloured at base), glabrous (rarely puberulous), margins scarious and finely glandular-ciliate, dorsal and ventral emarginate, lateral narrower and rounded or apiculate. Corolla limb blue, mauve, lilac or purple; tube 6-8 mm long, band of hairs just below insertion of stamens; limb 13-18 mm long, horizontal; lobes 5-6 mm long. Filaments 8-9 mm long, finely puberulous; anthers 2-3 mm long, glabrous to sparsely and shortly bearded near middle and with or without basal tuft or hairs. Capsule 10-14 mm long; seed c. 6 x 3 mm, with indistinct or large pectinate scales.
