Characteristics

Straggling shrub to 1 m tall, sometimes forming clumps up to 2.5 m across; young branches finely puberulous to densely pubescent or pilose. Leaves slightly anisophyllous, glossy, subcoriaceous, glabrous to sparsely puberulous or with scattered pilose hairs; petiole 0-2 mm long; lamina linear-lanceolate to oblong-elliptic, largest 2-5.5 x 0.4-1.5 cm; margin entire or some with 1-2(-4) fine teeth per side; apex acute to subobtuse with a pungent mucro 1-2 mm long; base cuneate. Racemes up to 6 cm long; peduncle up to 1 cm long, puberulous, with several small sterile bracts; rachis puberulous or densely so. Bracts and bracteoles green to brownish, linear-lanceolate to narrowly ovate or oblong, tip acute with pungent mucro (rarely with 2-3 small teeth), glabrous to puberulous, distinctly ciliate; bracts 12-18 mm long; pedicels stout, 2-5 mm long; bracteoles 15-18 mm long. Sepals coloured as bracts (straw-coloured at base), tip acute with a pungent mucro or dorsal 2-3-toothed, glabrous to finely puberulous, ciliate; dorsal 19-26 mm long, lanceolate to oblong, narrowed from base or parallel-sided, ventral and lateral linear-lanceolate, ventral 16-22 mm long, lateral 15-19 mm long. Corolla limb bright blue with darker veins; tube 6-7 mm long, band of hairs immediately below insertion of stamens; limb 17-20 mm long; lobes 4-5 mm long. Filaments 11-13 mm long, retrorsely pubescent towards base; anthers 2.5-4 mm long, not bearded but shortly hirsute-pubescent on lateral sides. Capsule c. 14 mm long; seed not seen.
