Characteristics

Glabrous or sparsely hairy annual; stems ribbed. Lvs sparsely hairy along margins, elliptic to ovate, acute or obtuse, c. 60-120 mm long (excluding petiole); petiole somewhat < blade; stipules partly adnate to petiole, ovate-lanceolate, 10-30 mm long. Infl. long-pedunculate, (1)-2-4-flowered. Calyx sparsely hairy; calyx teeth triangular-acuminate, < or = tube. Corolla yellow, 8-12 mm long. Pod glabrous, c. 10 mm diam., with 2-8, 1-seeded segments; outer 4-6 ribs tuberculate or spinose; seeds crescent-shaped.

The flowers are yellow and can have red or purple spots. They are 5-10 mm long. They are in long stalked clusters of 2-5 flowers. The fruit are curled pods. They are 30-50 mm long. Sometimes these have long slender processes on them.

Environment

Cultivated ground and dry places. Open grassland under cork oak, holm oak etc, fruit orchards, fallows etc, generally on basic substrates such as limestones, marls, gypsums and clays; at elevations up to 1,200 metres.
