Characteristics

Annual plant. Rhizome erect, 2–5 cm tall, simple or more rarely branched near the base, with a few basal fibrous roots. Leaves narrowly ovate to lanceolate, to c. 2 mm long, spreading, becoming reflexed; base decurrent along the stem, rapidly drawn to an acute apex (those at base of stem less tapered); margins entire. Spikes terminal, indistinct and often occupying the greater part of the stem; sporophylls similar to sterile leaves but broader and cordate at base, overlapping. Megaspores 400–570 µm diam.; distal face reticulate; proximal face with broken ridges. Microspores 30–35 µm diam., smooth to rugose.
