Plant creeping, often forming interwoven mats. Stems 10-120 mm long, branches all ± distant, those of secondary order 3-to 8-furcate, divaricate; ultimate branches 0.3-0.8 mm long. Leaves heteromorphic: median leaves ovate-lanceolate, acute or acuminate, 0.5-0.75 mm long, margins bordered with hyaline cells, dentate; lateral leaves ovate-elliptic, 1.25-1.75 x 0.75-1 mm, apex acute, rounded, base unequal, uppermost lobe amplexicaul, margins dentate, becoming ciliate basally with a narrow hyaline border, the whole when dry characteristically ensheathing stem. Strobili erect at apex of ultimate branches, maturing simultaneously throughout branch system, female basally, male above; sporophylls undifferentiated, similar to median leaves. Megaspores subrugulose, scabrate, 250-300 µm; triradiate ridge shallow. Microspores verrucate, 34-50 µm.
Stems herbaceous, widely creeping, anisotomously branched, forming loose mats, terete, up to 0.5 mm in diam. Lycophylls ligulate, pale green, imbricate, thinly herbaceous, median lycophylls sessile, lanceolate to ovate, up to 1.5 x 0.8 mm, serrulate, fimbriate towards base, lateral lycophylls ± patent, sessile, ovate to broadly ovate, up to 2 x 1.8 mm, amplexicaul, serrate, fimbriate towards base. Strobili heterophyllous, sessile, up to 6 mm long. Sporophylls in 4 ranks, herbaceous, lanceolate, up to 1.5 x 0.8 mm, carinate, serrulate. Sporangia globose, near axil of sporophylls, isovalvate, up to 0.8 mm in diam.
Terrestrial or epilithic, loosely mat-forming perennial. Stems repeatedly branched, prostrate. Leaves in 4 distinct rows, concolorous, curling beneath stem when dry, ciliate at base, median and lateral leaves dimorphic; median leaves elliptic, up to 1.2 mm long, closely clasping stem; lateral leaves elliptic, up to 2 mm long, spreading; sporophylls not distinct from median sterile leaves.
Plant creeping. Leaves of at least secondary branch systems markedly dimorphic. Lateral leaves 2 mm or less in length, curling beneath stem when dry; hyaline teeth becoming longer cilia at base of median leaves.
