Perennial plants, 5–40 cm tall. Rhizome subterranean, 1.5–2 mm thick; roots thick, rarely branched. Aerial stems stout, with simple branches in 1 plane, arising singly. Leaves lanceolate to ovate, 1–3 mm long, those on the lower part adpressed and distant, those above and on lateral branches divaricate, becoming reflexed and more crowded, often coriaceous and greenish pink; margins entire; apex acute. Strobili terminal, 5–25 mm long; sporophylls monomorphic (but megasporophylls tend to be broader), similar to but broader than leaves, peltately attached with the base reflexed and margins slightly toothed at the base. Megaspores 350–500 µm diam., reticulate with low ridges. Microspores 30–45 µm diam., finely reticulate-rugose.
