Characteristics

Dwarf woody shrublet c. 100-300 mm tall, stems erect or decumbent, very well branched and twiggy, branchlets ascending at angle of c. 45°, old bare inflorescence axes often persisting and subspinescent, young parts puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, recurved, minute glandular hairs less than c. 0.1 mm long also present, closely leafy. Leaves opposite soon alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves c. 2-8 x 0.5-1 mm, narrowly oblong, apex obtuse, base scarcely narrowed, margins entire, much thickened and revolute, sometimes uniting to make leaf broadly elliptic in T.S., texture thick, midrib somewhat raised on lower surface (invisible when margins united), both surfaces clad in minute (less than 0.1 mm) scattered glandular hairs, sometimes oozing, sometimes a few acute hairs c. 0.15 mm long on margins at extreme base; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescences, crowded terminal spike c. 1-25 x 6 mm in flower,-elongating in fruit and then flowers becoming somewhat distant, usually solitary, rarely a few smaller subsidiary spikes developing below it. Bract adnate to roughly half calyx tube, lowermost c. 2.2-4 x 0.5-0.8 mm, oblong to lanceolate, obtuse to subacute, thick-textured, minutely glandular on both surfaces, glands becoming few inside on upper bracts, hairs 0.15-0.4 mm long on margins, also often present on outer surface of bract. Pedicels wanting or up to c. 0.25 mm long. Calyx 1.6-2.2 mm long, obliquely campanulate, 5-lobed roughly halfway to base, anticous lobes somewhat broader than other three, hairs c. 0.2-0.5 mm long on margins of lobes, few to many hairs c. 0.1-0.3 mm long on outer surface, hairs often somewhat crisped, very minutely glandular all over as well. Corolla tube 1.7-3.2 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.8-1.5 x 0.5-1 mm, anticous lobe 1.2-2.8 x 0.7-1.7 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, shades of violet and mauve, rarely white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.3-2.5 mm long, anticous filaments 1.5-2.8 mm, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style c. 2-4 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm. Cocci (few seen) 1.2-1.3 x 0.8 mm, light orange-brown, smooth. The tough little bushes probably flower after rain as flowering has been recorded in most months.
