Characteristics

Coarse perennial herb, stems several from a stout woody stock, c. 600 mm-2 m long, ± erect, simple or subsimple below the inflorescence, pubescent, hairs up to 0.5-lmm long, patent or flexuous and then sometimes more or less dendroid (as in the type), closely leafy at least in upper part. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 15-55 x 2-8 mm (axillary and uppermost leaves smaller), oblanceolate or elliptic, apex acute, base narrowed, margins entire or with up to 4 pairs of teeth, glandular-punctate, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long scattered on upper surface or occasionally confined to margins, on lower surface confined to midrib. Inflorescence composed of few-flowered (up to c. 20) congested racemes arranged in small corymbs, these further arranged in a compact corymbose panicle, branchlets up to c. 90 mm long, moderately leafy. Bract adnate to pedicel and base of calyx tube, blade of lowermost 1.4-2.2 x 0.7-0.9 mm, elliptic, apex very acute, concave, ± embracing calyx, strongly keeled, pale membranous margins narrow or wanting, either glabrous or few hairs up to 0.1 mm long on keel and/or margins. Pedicel (lowermost) 0.5-lmm long. Calyx 1.25-1.8 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed, lobes 0.5-0.7 mm long, acute to obtuse, minutely glandular on anticous side, otherwise glabrous or hairs up to 0.1 mm long on margins. Corolla tube 1-1.6 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 2.5-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.7-1.7 x 0.7-1.1 mm, anticous lobe 1.3-2.3 x 0.7-1.1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white or rarely mauve. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-2 mm long, anticous filaments 1.3-2.5 mm, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style 1.4-3 mm long, style usually glabrous. Ovary c. 0.7 x 0.3 mm. Cocci c. 1.8 x 0.7 mm, ± oblong, almost smooth, brown.
