Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, very woody and gnarled under hard growing conditions, stems several tufted from a stout woody taproot up to 8-25 mm diam. at apex, 70-600 mm long, erect to sprawling, well branched, in gnarled specimens tips of branchlets eventually subspinescent, young parts pubescent, hairs c. 0.1-0.2 mm long, strongly recurved, appressed, leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate, weakly to strongly fascicled, largest primary leaves 5-23 x 1.8-5 mm, narrowly to broadly elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, apex obtuse or subacute, base narrowed to brief but distinct pedolar part, margins entire, thickened, slightly revolute in thick leaves, plane in thin ones, both surfaces sparsely to densely puberulous, hairs less than 0.1-0.2 mm long, strongly recurved; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescence composed of small racemes c. 5-8 x 6-10 mm in flower, elongating and lower flowers distant in fruit, solitary to loosely panicled. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost 2.5-4.5 x 0.8-1(-1.3) mm, elliptic, oblong-spathulate or oblong-lanceolate, subacute, base only slightly concave, pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.25 on margins, similar on backs, longest at base, also on inner face at tip, hairs recurved, often strongly so. Pedicels up to 0.1-0.3 mm long. Calyx 2-2.7 mm long, obliquely campanulate, 54obed roughly halfway to base, 2 anticous lobes broader than other three, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins, slightly shorter outside, all strongly recurved. Corolla tube 3-5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3.5-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.7 x 0.8-1.4 mm (or lip rarely entire or briefly notched), anticous lobe 2-2.8 x 1.2-2 mm, all lobes elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-3 mm long, anticous filaments 1.8-3.5 mm long, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style 3-7.5 mm long, style with a few hairs or glabrous. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.5 mm. Cocci 1.4-2 x 0.8-1 mm, smooth, yellow-or red-brown. Flowering principally in August and September (overall May to October).
