Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Well branched dwarf shrublet up to c. l m tall, old stems nude, woody, up to c. 5 mm in diam., young stems pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, retrorse, closely leafy. Leaves mostly alternate, fascicled, largest primary leaves 3-8 x 1-1.8 mm, elliptic, apex subacute or obtuse, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, slightly thickened or not, texture thick (blade elliptic in transverse section), venation invisible, glandular-punctate, few minute hairs up to 0.1 mm long on margins at base and occasionally higher, but leaves look glabrous on casual inspection; axillary leaves similar. Inflorescence composed of few-flowered glomerules c. 5-8 x 4-7 mm arranged in a narrow (c. l 5 mm across) terminal panicle up to c. 50-70 mm long, glomerules either sessile or on short leafy peduncles, panicle sometimes compounded, then up to c. l00 mm long, and broader. Bract adnate to pedicel and at least lower part of calyx tube, lowermost 2.2-3.7 x 0.8-1.4 mm, elliptic or oblong-elliptic, lower part concave, apex acute to obtuse, hairs on margins up to 0.15-0.2 mm long, none or few on back (there to 0.1-0.15 mm), scattered minute glands both there and on inner face. Pedicel up to c. 0.1-0.4 mm long, hidden by calyx. Calyx 1.4-2.5 mm long, obliquely campanulate, mostly 5-lobed up to c. halfway to base, sometimes irregularly 3-5-lobed (as in type), 2 anticous lobes distinctly broader than other 3, all lobes deltoid, acute, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm on margins, 0.1-0.2 mm long outside together with minute globular glands. Corolla tube 2-3.5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.9-1.4 x 0.6-1 mm, or posticous lip entire (c. l-1.6 x 1.1-1.4 mm), anticous lobe 1.4-2.2 x 1.1-1.7 mm, all lobes elliptic, white. Stamens; posticous filaments 1.4-2 mm long, anticous filaments 1.7-2.3 mm, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style c. 2-3.7 mm long, style very minutely puberulous, hairs sometimes very few. Ovary c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm. Cocci c. l.7-1.8 x 1 mm, smooth, light yellow-brown, inner face plane.
More

Flowers in few-flowered, sessile or shortly pedunculate glomerules, 5-8 x 4-7 mm, grouped in a narrow, terminal panicle ± 50-70 mm long, sometimes further compound. Bracts adnate to lower part of calyx tube at least, elliptic or oblong-elliptic. Calyx oblique, mostly 5-lobed in upper 1/2, sometimes irregularly 3-5-lobed, 2 anticous lobes wider than others, all deltate. Corolla white. Flowering time Sept.-Dec.
