Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, stems many tufted from a thick woody stock, c. 250-500 mm long, up to c. 2 mm in diam., virgately branched from base, spreading to erect, minutely puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, strongly retrorse, closely leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, fascicled, primary leaves 2-8 x 0.5-1 mm, linear to narrowly elliptic, apex acute to obtuse, base scarcely narrowed, margins entire, thickened, revolute, texture thick, venation invisible, glandular-punctate, very minute (less than 0.1 mm) hairs scattered all over, to 0.1 mm on lower margins and on upper surface at base. Inflorescence a narrow panicle c. 50-110 mm long, either simple or compounded and then very twiggy, even fastigiate, individual glomerules few-flowered, c. 4-7 x 4-7 mm elongating to c. 5-15 mm in fruit, either remaining crowded or flowers becoming distant, peduncles roughly 0-10 mm long, leafy or not. Bract adnate to at least half calyx tube, lowermost 1.7-2.2 x 0.8-1 mm, ovate, subacute, deeply concave, hairs to 0.1-0.2 mm long on margins, back glabrous or few hairs 0.1 mm or less on lower back. Pedicels none or up to 0.3 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, slightly obliquely campanulate, 5-lobed more than halfway to base, 2 anticous lobes broader than other three, hairs up to 0.15-0.3 mm long on margins, up to 0.1-0.15 mm long outside together with minute globular glands. Corolla tube 2-2.5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 2.8-4 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.8-1 x 0.5-0.8 mm, anticous lobe 1.3-2 x 0.8-1.2 mm, all lobes oblong, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.7 mm long, anthers shortly exerted, anticous filaments 1.2-1.8 mm, anthers well exerted. Stigma and style c. 2-2.8 mm long, glabrous or with a few very minute globular glands. Ovary c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1.4-1.6 x 0.7-0.8 mm, red-brown, smooth or slightly rugulose.
