Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Perennial herb, stems 50-400 mm long, several tufted from apex of woody taproot, crown up to c. 15 mm in diam., old plants sometimes stoloniferous, stems prostrate to erect, simple or loosely branched, floriferous roughly in upper half or two thirds, puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long, rather coarse, strongly recurved and appressed, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, soon alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 5-10 x 0.5-1(-1.5 mm occasionally on very young stems), linear or very narrowly elliptic, apex acute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, thickened, somewhat revolute especially when dry, midrib slightly raised on lower surface near base, invisible on upper surface, glandular-punctate, coarse hairs up to 0.1 mm long (mostly less than 0.1 mm) on margins and midline on lower surface, sometimes few; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescence composed of innumerable small racemes c. 2-3 x 3-4 mm in first flower, elongating to c. 8-40 mm in fruit, flowers becoming distant, peduncles mostly c. 15-50 mm or more long, very leafy, arranged in long narrow profusely branched leafy panicles. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost c. 2.3-3 x 0.6-0.9 mm, lanceolate or subspathulate, acute or subacute, with conspicuous white membranous margins c. 0.2 mm broad tapering away near apex, glandular-punctate, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long on margins near base. Pedicel c. 0.1-0.25 mm long. Calyx 1.1-1.2 mm long, very obliquely 3-lobed, anticolateral lobes c. 1 x 0.6-0.7 mm (these occasionally bifid), hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long on margins, outside 0.1 mm on posticous side together with minute globular glands. Corolla tube 1.2-1.7 mm long (all parts smaller when flowers female), funnel-shaped, limb 2.2-2.7 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lip 0.6-1 x 0.8-1.6 mm, entire or notched, anticous lobe 1.1-1.4 x 0.8-0.9 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.6 mm long, anticous filaments 1.3-2 mm long, all anthers well exserted. Stigma and style c. 1.6-3 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.3 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1-1.2 x 0.7-1 mm, orange-to red-brown, smooth, the pair broadly ovoid in outline.
