Characteristics

Perennial herb or suffrutex, stems eventually several tufted from crown of woody stock (but will flower when young and stem solitary), c. 350-600 mm long, erect to straggling or sprawling, simple to loosely well branched, old parts nude, woody, young parts puberulous, hairs less than 0.1 mm long, recurved, closely leafy. Leaves alternate, ± fascicled, often weakly so, primary leaves 12-40 x 0.8-3(-5.5) mm, linear or narrowly elliptic, apex acute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, slightly thickened, plane or revolute, thin-textured, midrib incised above, raised below, glandular-punctate, margins and midrib on lower surface often with scabrid, broad-based hairs up to 0.1 mm long. Inflorescences simple crowded terminal spike elongate even in young bud, c. 10-15 mm across in flower, c. 55-200 x 7 mm in fruit, only lowermost flowers distant, solitary or very loosely panicled. Bract adnate to calyx tube, lowermost 5-12 x 0.7-1 mm, leaflike, glabrous or with a. few minute scabrid hairs on margins. Pedicels wanting or up to 0.5 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2.5 mm long, campanulate. 5-lobed halfway or more to base, anticous lobes only slightly broader than other three, all lobes narrowly triangular, very acute to acuminate, few minute globular glands on margins and scattered all over outside. Corolla tube 4.3-5.4 mm long, cylindric below, expanded above, limb 3.2-4.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-1.8 x 0.8-1 mm, anticous lobe 1.7-2.2 x 0.8-1.1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens, posticous filaments 1-1.5 mm long, anthers in mouth; anticous filaments 1.5-2.2 mm, anthers shortly exerted. Stigma and style c. 5-6 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.5 mm. Cocci 1.7-1.8 x 1-1.1 mm, light yellow-brown, rugulose, with a pair of incipient spurious cells.

Anthers: upper pair in mouth. Fruit yellowish brown cocci, rough.
