Characteristics

Perennial herb, no basal parts seen, probably branching only near base into long simple sharply ascending rodlike branches each terminating in an inflorescence, longest branch seen 650 mm, c. 4 mm in diam., villous, hairs up to 0.7-1.5 mm long, patent or recurved, closely leafy, leaves smaller and distant upwards. leaves alternate, fascicled, largest primary ones 10-35 x 3-10 mm, broadly to narrowly elliptic or oblong-elliptic, triplinerved, apex subacute, base only slightly narrowed, margins entire or with up to 6 pairs of small or obscure teeth in upper half, glandular-punctate, both surfaces thinly villous or upper glabrescent, hairs up to 0.7-1 mm long. Brad adnate to pedicel, free from calyx, lowermost c. 3.4-4 x 1-1.4 mm, elliptic, lower half deeply concave, keeled and with a pale membranous margin, fringed with hairs up to 0.4-0.6 mm long, sometimes a few hairs also at tip and on keel. Pedicel (lowermost) c. 0.4-1.2 mm long. Calyx c. 3.3-3.7 mm long, tubular, subequally 5-lobed, lobes much shorter than tube, deltoid, acute, hairs up to c. 0.5-0.7 mm long on margins and anticous face, there also minutely glandular, accrescent to enclose the cocci. Corolla tube 3.2-3.7 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb c. 4 mm across the spreading lateral lobes, posticous lobes c. 1-1.7 x 0.7-1.1 mm, anticous lobe c. 1.5-2 x 1-1.2 mm, elliptic, purple (Tyson) or white (Okell). Stamens: posticous filaments 1.3-2 mm long, anthers in throat; anticous filaments 1.5-2 mm long, anthers shortly exserted. Stigma and style c. 2.8-4 mm long, style sparsely and very minutely puberulous. Ovary c. 1 x 0.4 mm. Cocci c. 3 x 1 mm, ± oblong, smooth, light brown.
