Characteristics

Shrublet c. 300-500 mm tall, virgately branched, branches erect, sharply ascending, stiff, rodlike, pubescent, hairs c. 0.3-1 mm long, patent, young parts closely leafy. leaves alternate, mostly strongly fascicled, lower leaves sometimes only weakly so, largest primary leaves 3-8 x 1.2-2.7 mm, elliptic or lanceolate, apex subacute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, thickened, slightly revolute, texture thick, venation invisible, glandular-punctate, coarse hairs c. 0.2-1 mm long mainly on margins and nearby, some scattered on lower surface, upper surface usually glabrous, occasionally hairy. Inflorescences crowded terminal spike c. 25-40 x 12 mm in first flower, no fully expanded ones seen, but clearly can reach 80-100 mm, solitary to few corymbosely arranged. Bract adnate to whole of calyx tube, lowermost (3-)3.7-8 x 0.7-1.25 mm, lanceolate, acute, concave only near base, hairs up to 0.4-1 mm long on margins and back. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 2.2-4 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed at least halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, very acute, acute hairs up to 0.5-0.8 mm long on margins and outer surface, minute globular glands as well. Corolla tube 4.5-8 mm long, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb 4.5-7 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-3 x 0.9-1.8 mm, anticous lobe 2-3.5 x 1.1-1.8 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white, corolla either glabrous outside or with scattered acute hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long, together with very minute glandular hairs. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-2.4 mm long, anthers in mouth; anticous filaments 1.8-3 mm long, anthers shortly exerted. Stigma and style c. 5-8 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.6 mm. Cocci 2-2.1 x 1-1.1 mm, red-brown, very slightly rugulose. Flowering is principally between January and June, but there are a few records from October and November.
