Selago lacunosa Klotzsch

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Perennial herb that will flower when very young and only single-stemmed, eventually several stems from apex of woody taproot, crown up to 10 mm in diam., stems c. 150-600 mm long, stoutest seen 7 mm in diam. but this exceptional, simple to loosely well branched, suberect to prostrate, usually floriferous only in upper part, puberulous, hairs up to 0.1-0.2(-0.4) mm long, recurved, mostly appressed, lower part of old stems often nude, younger parts closely leafy. Leaves opposite soon alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 8-30 x 0.8-3 mm (caution : these often wanting in older plants with stems nude at base), oblong-elliptic to narrowly oblanceolate, apex subacute or obtuse, base narrowed, petiolate in largest leaves, margins entire or occasionally with up to 4 tiny teeth near apex, slightly thickened, scarcely revolute, midrib slightly raised on lower surface, invisible on upper, hairs often minute but stout, up to 0.1-0.2 mm long on margins, either confined to midline on lower surface, or scattered over both surfaces, glandular-punctate as well; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescence composed of innumerable racemes c. 3 x 3 mm in first flower, elongating to c. 15-20 mm in fruit, pedicels then distant, arranged in long panicles, simple or compound. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost 1.5-2.4 x 0.3-0.6 mm, oblong-spathulate, obtuse, tip ± hooded, incurved, white membranous margins usually wanting rarely present, then less than 0.1 mm broad, hairs few, up to 0.1-0.15 mm long on lower margins, sometimes on keel as well, often globular glands as well. Pedicels 0.15-0.3 mm long. Calyx 0.8-1.1 mm long, very obliquely 3-lobed, anticolateral lobes occasionally bifid, each lobe served by a vascular strand, posticous lobe minute, anticolateral lobes 0.7-1 x 0.2-0.4 mm, hairs to 0.1-0.15 mm long on margins and outside on posticous side, minute globular glands as well. Corolla tube 0.8-1.1 mm long (all parts smaller when flowers female), funnel-shaped, limb 1.5-2 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.4-0.7 x 0.3-0.4 mm or lip sometimes entire, anticous lobe 0.7-1 x 0.4-0.8 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.6-1 mm long, anticous filaments 0.8-1.2 mm, all anthers well exserted (except in female flowers). Stigma and stylec. 1.2-2 mm long. Ovary c. 0.25 x 0.25 mm. Cocci 0.6-0.8 x 0.5-0.7 mm, orange-or red-brown, smooth or slightly granular, the pair reniform or cordate in outline. The plants probably flower whenever moisture is available to promote growth.
