Leaves opposite, soon alternate, not or weakly fascicled, largest primary leaves 4-12 x 1.2-2 mm, elliptic to oblong-elliptic, apex subacute to obtuse, base narrowed, very shortly petiolar in largest leaves, margins thickened, scarcely revolute though often rolled under when dry, texture thick (leaf elliptic in transverse section), midrib slightly raised on lower surface, glandular-punctate, mostly with coarse broad-based hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long on and near margins, sometimes along midrib on under surface as well, rarely also a few on upper surface. Inflorescence a crowded terminal spike c. 10-14 x 10-14 mm in first flower, elongating to c. 30 mm in fruit, lowermost flowers then sometimes becoming distant, often solitary, occasionally with a pair of subsidiary spikes, flowers sessile. Bract adnate to entire calyx tube, lowermost c. 3-4.8 x 0.7-1.2 mm, elliptic, thick-textured, apex subacute, hairs up to 0.25-0.4 mm long all over back and margins, together with minute glandular hairs. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 2.2-3 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed more than halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, acute, hairs up to 0.2-0.4 mm long on margins, somewhat shorter all over outside together with many very minute stalked glands. Corolla tube 4.5-7 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 4.5-7 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.5-2 x 1.1-1.3 mm, anticous lobe 2-3 x 1.2-1.7 mm, all lobes elliptic, white, they and the corolla tube puberulous outside with acute ± recurved hairs, globular glands as well. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.1-1.2 mm long, anthers in throat or occasionally very shortly exerted, anticous filaments 1.7-2 mm, anthers shortly exerted. Style and stigma c. 5-9 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm. Cocci 2-2.3 x 1-1.3 mm, smooth or slightly rugulose, yellow-or red-brown. Flowering mainly between January and July, but as early as November.
