Selago lilacina Hilliard

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Perennial, no basal parts seen, once recorded as 'bush', but possibly stems tufted from a stock, stem at least 450 mm tall, 3 mm in diam., erect or decumbent, simple or more or less divaricately branched (only when decumbent?), hairs c. 0.3-0.6 mm long in narrow bands running down stem, ± recurved, closely leafy. Leaves fascicled, alternate, largest primary leaves 7.5-12.5 x 1.2-2 mm, narrowly elliptic, apex ± acute, base scarcely narrowed, decurrent, margins entire, slightly thickened, glandular-punctate, ± setose, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long, mainly on or near margins, few along lower midline, even fewer on upper midline, occasionally wanting, especially on axillary leaves. Inflorescence composed of racemes c. 4-6 x 4-5 mm in first flower elongating to c. 10-15 mm in fruit, flowers then ± distant, on short leafless peduncles arranged in a more or less pyramidal terminal compound panicle. Bract adnate to calyx tube, lowermost 2.8-3.8 x 1.2-1.8 mm, ovate, acute, concave, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long on margins only. Pedicels c. 0.1-0.2 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2.25 mm long, obliquely 3-lobed or rarely anticolateral lobes irregularly bifid, anticolateral lobes broadly deltoid, much larger than posticous lobe, hairs up to 0.2-0.25 mm long on margins only or rarely a very few on keels, otherwise outside glabrous except for a few globular glands on posticous side. Corolla tube 2-3 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3-5.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.8 x 1-1.2 mm, anticous lobe 2-3 x 1-1.8 mm (all parts smaller when flowers female), all lobes oblong-elliptic, mauve. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long, anticous filaments 2.1-3.5 mm, all anthers well to far exerted. Stigma and style c. 3-4.2 mm long, style usually glabrous, occasionally a few small hairs. Ovary c. 0.6 x 0.5 mm. Cocci 1.5-2 x 1-1.2 mm, reddish-brown, slightly rugulose, without spurious cells.
