Selago mediocris Hilliard

Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Shrublet up to c. 1 m tall, probably spindly, branches virgate, up to c. 4 mm in diam., pubescent, hairs 0.1-0.2 mm long, mostly strongly recurved, closely leafy. Leaves fascicled, opposite, soon alternate upwards, largest primary leaves 3-7 x 0.6-1 mm (largest axillary leaves 3-10 x 0.5-0.8 mm, often much longer than primary leaves), lanceolate or oblong, apex subacute or obtuse, base broad, margins entire, plane or revolute (axillary leaves oblong, apex ± obtuse, margins revolute), texture thick, surface dull, glandular-punctate, much wrinkled when dry, glabrous except for a few minute hairs on lower margins of primary leaves. Inflorescence terminal, composed of congested spikes c. 5-10 x 5-8 mm, further arranged in small congested corymbose panicles c. 20 x 20-25 mm, these sometimes laxer and therefore larger. Bract adnate to extreme base of calyx tube, lowermost 2.2-3.8 x 1-1.25 mm, lanceolate, lower part concave, acute, glabrous except for hairs c. 0.1-0.3 mm long confined to margins. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 2.1-3 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed at least halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, acute, strongly keeled, hairs up to c. 0.4 mm long on margins, c. 0.1 mm on tube together with very minute glandular hairs. Corolla tube 3.5-5 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb c. 4-5.3 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-1.8 x 0.8-1.2 mm, anticous lobe 2-2.4 x 1-1.4 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.4-2.5 mm long, anticous filaments 2.1-2.8 mm, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style c. 4-5 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm. Cocci, c. 2.2 x 1 mm, dark brown, rugulose, inner face almost plane. Flowering has been recorded in April, May, June, September and October.
