Characteristics

Perennial herb, stems c. 100-400 mm long, several tufted from crown of woody taproot, often prostrate, occasionally decumbent to suberect, simple or subsimple, floriferous mainly in upper half, occasionally nearly to base, puberulous, hairs 0.15-0.2 mm long, strongly recurved, ± appressed, leafy. Leaves opposite, soon alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 6-15 x 1-1.8 mm, oblong-elliptic, apex, acute or subacute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, scarcely thickened, midrib slightly raised at base on lower surface, otherwise venation invisible, few coarse hairs up to 0.1 mm long on margins at base, occasionally very small ones higher up; axillary leaves similar but smaller. Inflorescence composed of innumerable racemes c. 1 x 5 mm in first flower, elongating to c. 10-20 mm in fruit, remaining crowded, peduncles c. 2-20 mm long, leafy, arranged in long narrow panicles, simple or compound. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost c. 2-2.6 x 0.7-0.8 mm, sometimes oblong-elliptic, mostly more or less spathulate, acute or subacute, with conspicuous white membranous margins c. 0.2 mm broad, glandular-punctate, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long on lower margins. Pedicel 0.15-0.3 mm long. Calyx 1.2-1.4 mm long, very obliquely 3-lobed, anticolateral lobes 1-1.1 x 0.6-0.8 mm, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long on margins, few c. 0.1 mm long on posticous side, together with minute glands. Corolla tube 1.2-1.8 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 2.2-3 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lip 0.8-1.1 x 1-1.1 mm, entire or notched, anticous lobe 1-1.3 x 0.8-1 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.4 mm long, anticous filaments 1.2-1.8 mm, all anthers well exserted. Stigma and style 2-3.2 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.3 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1-1.3 x 0.8-1.3 mm, red-brown, smooth, the pair broadly ovoid in outline Flowering occurs in all months, but most records are from January to March.
