Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Dwarf woody shrublet, stems spreading or prostrate, c. 200-500 mm long, up to c. 6 mm in diam., ± divaricately well branched, old parts bare, gnarled, bark greyish to blackish, old bare inflorescence axes persistent, subspinescent, young parts puberulous, hairs c. 0.1 mm long, ± retrorse, closely leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, strongly fascicled, spreading, largest primary leaves 1-6 x 0.5-1 mm, narrowly oblong or ovate (mostly when very small), apex obtuse, base broad, margins entire, thickened, revolute, texture moderately thick, venation invisible, distinctly puberulous all over, hairs up to 0.1 mm long, slightly longer on margins at extreme base, not glandular-punctate; axillary leaves similar. Inflorescence composed of ± sessile glomerules (very congested racemes) c. 4-7 x 5-7 mm in first flower, elongating slightly in fruit, often arranged in long narrow crowded terminal panicles c. 35-150 x 10-15 mm, or occasionally glomerules terminating leafy peduncles, then panicle broader. Bract adnate to roughly half calyx tube and minute pedicel, lowermost (1.7-)2.2-3.2 x (0.8-)1-1.5 mm, ovate, obtuse or subacute, concave, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long on margins, to 0.1-0.15 mm scattered on both surfaces. Pedicels 0.1-0.3 mm long. Calyx 1.5-2 mm long, obliquely campanulate, lobed roughly halfway to base, two anticous lobes much broader than other three, deltoid, hairs up to 0.15-0.2 mm long on margins, to 0.1-0.15 mm outside mainly on posticous side together with minute globular glands. Corolla tube 2.3-3.8 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3.2-4.2 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-1.8 x 0.8-1.1 mm or posticous lip entire to shallowly notched, anticous lobe 1.6-2.3 x 1-1.5 mm, all lobes elliptic-oblong, white or mauve. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2.5 mm long, anticous filaments 2-3 mm, all anthers far exerted. Stigma and style c. 2.8-5 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm. Cocci (few seen) 1.3-1.5 x 1-1.2 mm, dark red-brown, rugulose.
