Characteristics

Small shrublet or perennial herb, branches erect, decumbent or spreading, c. 300-500 mm long, thickly clad in hairs up to 0.2-0.6 mm long, patent or slightly recurved, densely leafy. Leaves fascicled, opposite becoming alternate upwards, largest primary leaves 3.5-9.5 x 1.5-2 mm (largest axillary leaves 2-7.5 x 0.8-1.5 mm), lanceolate, apex acute or subacute, base slightly narrowed then broadened and clasping, margins entire, plane or somewhat revolute particularly in upper half (axillary oblong to narrowly elliptic, apex subacute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, thickened, slightly revolute, often markedly so when dry), texture thick, tending to dry in transverse wrinkles, glandular-punctate, often otherwise glabrous except for a few hairs on lower margins of primary leaves, sometimes with tiny stout hairs c. 0.1-0.15 mm long on margins. Inflorescence composed of few-flowered racemes c. 12-20 x 10-12 mm, flowers crowded, sometimes distant at base of raceme, racemes arranged in small terminal corymbose panicles or long narrow panicles when branches spreading or sprawling. Bract adnate to pedicel and extreme base of calyx tube, lowermost 3.3-5.7 x 0.9-1.2 mm, lanceolate, acute, scarcely concave, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long confined to margins. Pedicel either wanting or up to c. 05 mm long. Calyx 2.2-3.7 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed more than halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, acute, hairs up to 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins, few on tube particularly on posticous side, very minutely glandular as well. Corolla tube 4-6 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 4.5-6 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.5-2 x 1.2-1.4 mm, anticous lobe 2-3 x 1.25-1.7 mm, all lobes broadly elliptic, white (once recorded as violet-white). Stamens: posticous filaments 1.1-1.8 mm long, anthers in mouth or very shortly exerted; anticous filaments 1.6-2.8 mm long, anthers shortly exerted. Stigma and style4.3-7 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm. Cocci 2-2.4 x 1.2 mm, brown, rugulose, deeply concave on inner face.
More
Like S. luxurians but primary leaves mostly longer (3.5-9.5 mm vs. 2.4-4.5 mm), and bracts larger and glabrous abaxially.
