Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Probably a short-lived perennial herb that will flower in the seedling stage, stems few from a woody taproot, 150 mm to lm long, erect or decumbent, simple or sparingly branched low down, pubescent (usually on inflorescence branches as well), hairs up to 0.2-1 mm long, patent to somewhat recurved and then sometimes with a small branch cell on upper side of curve, closely leafy. leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, weakly fascicled or not, largest primary leaves 10-40 x 1-20 mm, smaller upwards (axillary leaves also smaller), linear to broadly elliptic, apex acute, callose-tipped, base tapering, petiolar in largest leaves, margins thickened, either entire or with up to 7 pairs of tiny teeth, glandular-punctate, scabrid hairs up to 0.1-0.6 mm long on margins and scattered on upper surface, confined to midrib on lower surface, sometimes very small and few. Inflorescence a terminal raceme c. 8-20 mm in diam., in fruit either remaining congested or elongating up to c. 100 mm, lowermost flowers often distant, in well-grown plants lateral flowering branchlets developing to form a very loose more or less corymbose panicle, the lateral branches often overtopping the primary inflorescence. Bract adnate to pedicel and base of calyx tube, blade c. 2 x 1-1.3 mm, elliptic, apex subacute to obtuse, deeply concave, ± embracing calyx, strongly keeled and with broad, pale membranous margins, keel almost glabrous to scabrid with upward-pointing hairs c. 0.1 mm long, margins membranous, either glabrous or a few tiny hairs at apex. Pedicel (lowermost) 3-7 mm long. Calyx 1.8-2.3 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed, lobes c. 0.8 mm long, acute or subacute, minutely glandular on anticous side, otherwise glabrous or a few tiny hairs on margins. Corolla tube 1.6-2.5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3-4.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-2 x 0.7-1.25 mm, anticous lobe 1.2-2.2 x 0.7-1.2 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.8-1.2 mm long, anthers in mouth; anticous filaments 1-1.7 mm long, anthers well exerted. Stigma and style 1.7-2.4 mm long, style minutely puberulous. Ovary c. 0.7 x 0.4 mm. Cocci 2-2.2 x 0.8-lmm, ± oblong, slightly rugulose, brown.
More
Herb, probably perennial, flowering as seedling, up to 1 m long; stems few, simple or sparsely branched near base; pubescent, hairs patent to somewhat recurved. Leaves not or hardly tufted, main ones up to 40 x 20 mm, linear to broadly elliptic, acute with callose tip, entire or teeth minute. Flowers many in terminal racemes up to ± 20 mm in diam., sometimes forming a lax, ± corymbose panicle, staying dense or lengthening in fruit up to ± 100 mm long. Bracts ladle-like, reaching ± level of calyx apex; blade elliptic, pale margins broad. Pedicels basal ones up to 7 mm long. Calyx: lobes acute, ± glabrous. Corolla white. Anthers: upper ones in mouth, lower ones well exserted. Flowering time all year.
