Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, often gnarled, stunted, and possibly heavily browsed, stems tufted from stout woody taproot, c. 150-350 mm (but possibly to 1 m) long, erect, decumbent or straggling, eventually well-branched, old nude inflorescence axes subspinescent, young parts pubescent, hairs to c. 0.2(-0.3) mm long, retrorse, appressed, closely leafy. Leaves opposite at base, alternate upwards or sometimes opposite throughout, fascicled, sometimes weakly so, largest primary leaves 5-15 x 1.25-2.4 mm, elliptic or narrowly elliptic, apex obtuse or subacute, base narrowed then abruptly expanded and half-clasping, margins entire, thickened (revolute), texture thick, midrib slightly raised on lower surface, glandular-punctate, almost scabridulous hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long often scattered on both surfaces, longest on margins at base and sometimes confined to this part; axillary leaves similar. Inflorescences terminal glomerule (raceme) c. 10-30 x 10-20 mm elongating in fruit to c. 30-40 mm, lowermost flowers becoming distant, often solitary sometimes subsidiary glomerules developing below it to produce a narrow panicle up to 50-70 mm long, to c. l00 mm in well-grown specimens, subsidiary glomerules c. 7-10 x 7-10 mm, sessile or on peduncles up to 4-5 mm long, rarely longer and then themselves developing subsidiary glomerules. Bract adnate to pedicel and lower part of calyx tube, lowermost 4-7 x 2-3.8 mm, broadly elliptic, concave, apex subacute, base pouched, hugging base of calyx and concealing the sharply curved pedicel, hairs up to 0.1-0.3(-0.4-0.8) mm long on margins, shorter (c. 0.1-0.15(-0.3)mm) scattered all over back, or confined to lower half, or occasionally glabrous, upper part of inner face puberulous. Pedicel up to 0.1-0.6 mm long, sharply bent under base of calyx. Calyx 3-5.4 mm long, campanulate, usually 5-lobed less than halfway to base (occasionally irregularly 3-4-lobed), 2 anticous lobes broader than other three, all lobes deltoid, subacute, hairs up to 0.25-0.8 mm long on margins, c. 0.1-0.3(-0.6-0.8) mm long on outer surface, often recurved, minute globular glands scattered particularly on anticous side. Corolla tube 4-5.5 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 5-7.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.3-3 x 1-2 mm, anticous lobe 2.1-4 x 1.2-2.5 mm (all parts smaller when flowers female), all lobes elliptic, white or cream. Stamens: posticous filaments c. 2.1-3.5(-4.6) mm long, anticous filaments 2.5-4.6 mm long, all anthers well exerted except in female flowers. Stigma and style c. 5-8 mm long, style usually glabrous. Ovary c. 1 x 0.8 mm. Cocci c. 2.5-3.2 x 1.9-2.2 mm, reddish-brown, smooth, inner face plane. Flowering occurs from July to October, mainly August.
