Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Suffrutex, height unknown, but broken stems 150-400 mm long, habit unknown, possibly single-stemmed, stem erect or suberect, simple or loosely virgately branched in upper part, pubescent, hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long, patent or slightly recurved, sunken glands as well, often oozing, densely leafy. Leaves opposite, quickly alternate upwards, strongly fascicled, largest primary leaves 6-12 x 0.5-1.2 mm, axillary leaves similar, linear-oblong, apex acute or subacute, bluntly apiculate, slightly recurved, base slightly narrowed or not, margins entire, plane, often revolute when dry, texture thick, venation invisible (midrib often raised on lower surface when dry), glandular-punctate, often oozing, sometimes a few minute scattered hairs as well or a few on margins at base. Inflorescence a compact spike c. 10-12 x 10-12 mm in first flower, elongating or not to c. 20-60 mm in fruit, either solitary or loosely subcorymbosely or paniculately arranged at tips of leafy branches. Bract adnate to calyx tube, lowermost 4.8-6 x 1-1.5 mm, linear-lanceolate, tip ± acuminate, obtuse, recurved, hairs 0.15-0.2 mm long on margins, sometimes to 0.1 mm long on keels, minute globular glands on both surfaces, glandular-punctate as well, often oozing. Pedicel wanting or very nearly so. Calyx 2.3-3.3 mm long, obliquely 3-lobed, anticolateral lobes broadly deltoid, 1.2-2 x 0.8-1.3 mm, hairs up to 0.25-0.6 mm long on margins, c. 0.1-0.15 mm on posticous side and keels, scattered globular glands as well. Corolla tube 5-6 mm long (bract, calyx and corolla tube all shorter in female flowers), funnel-shaped, limb 4-6 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.7-3 x 0.8-1.3 mm, anticous lobe 2.2-3.5 x 1-1.5 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.25-3 mm long, anthers in mouth or shortly exerted; anticous filaments 1.8-3.2 mm long, anthers briefly to well exerted (staminodes included in female flowers). Stigma and style c. 4-6 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.6 mm. Cocci 1.8-2.1 x 1-1.4 mm, orange-or red-brown, smooth. Flowering in any month.
More

Leaves: main ones up to 12 x 1.2 mm, linear-oblong, ± acute to apiculate, base not or hardly narrowing, margins flat, often revolute when dry, indumentum as for stems. Flowers in a relatively large, dense, terminal spike 12 x 12 mm at first, lengthening up to 60 mm long in fruit, single or grouped in a lax panicle, sometimes ± corymbose. Bracts linear-lanceolate, ± acuminate, obtuse and recurved, indumentum as above. Pedicel ± absent. Calyx obliquely 3-lobed, anticous lobes widely deltate, margins with long hairs. Corolla white.
