Characteristics

Perennial herb or shrublet, loosely and ± divaricately branched, stems up to 300-500 mm long (possibly longer) or will flower as a well-browsed herb with tufts of simple stems as little as 50 mm long, stems sprawling or decumbent, young parts densely puberulous, hairs c. 0.1 mm long, recurved, together with scattered longer hairs up to 0.2-0.25(-0.6) mm long, patent to recurved, laxly leafy. leaves not or scarcely fascicled, opposite becoming alternate upwards, ascending to ± spreading, largest leaves 4-13 x 1.2-2 mm, oblong, apex subacute, base slightly narrowed, decurrent in very narrow ridges, margins entire, thickened, revolute, texture thick, venation invisible, glandular-punctate, coarse broad-based hairs up to 0.1-0.2(-0.5) mm long thinly scattered all over. Inflorescence a crowded terminal spike c. 15-25 x 15 mm in flower, either solitary or with 2-3 subsidiary spikes corymbosely arranged. Bract adnate to whole of calyx tube, lowermost 5-6 x 1.2-1.25 mm, oblong-lanceolate, subacute, thick-textured, slightly concave at base, usually with hairs c. 0.2-0.4 mm long on margins, 0.1-0.3 mm long on backs, few very minute glandular hairs as well, these also on inner face, or occasionally hairs may be almost confined to margins. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 3-3.7 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed more than halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, acute, acute hairs 0.15-0.25 mm long on margins and outer surface, minute globular glands as well. Corolla tube 6.4-7.8 mm long, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb 5-6.6 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-2.4 x 1.2-1.5 mm, anticous lobe 2.5-3 x 1.4-1.5 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white, scattered minute hairs on outside of corolla. Stamens: posticous filaments 1-1.5 mm long, anthers included or in mouth; anticous filaments 2-2.2 mm long, anthers shortly exerted. Stigma and style 6.5-11 mm long, style puberulous. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.5 mm. Cocci c. 2 x 1.3 mm, red-brown, slightly rugulose.

Like S. psammophila but flowering spikes only to 25 x 15 mm (vs. 30-40 x ± 12 mm) and glandular hairs few, only at base of outside of bracts.
