Characteristics

Perennial herb, single-stemmed to shrubby, stems c. 400 mm to over 2 m long, up to c. 5 mm in diam., erect, straggling or sprawling, densely glandular, hairs up to c. 0.3 mm long, often with few to many patent acute hairs as well, these up to 0.4-1.5 mm long, closely leafy. Leaves opposite becoming alternate upwards, fascicled, primary leaves c. 20-50 x 5-20 mm (smaller on inflorescence branches, axillary ones very much smaller), elliptic or lanceolate, apex usually acute, base narrowed, sometimes petiole-like, margins entire or with 1-8 pairs of small teeth in upper part, strongly tripli-or quintuplinerved, both surfaces glandular, usually with few to many acute hairs as well, these up to 0.3-0.8 mm long. Inflorescence a large profusely branched leafy panicle, individual racemes few-flowered (3-20), flowers somewhat crowded but lowermost one or few often distant. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost ± elliptic, leaf-like, 5-10 x 1.6-4.8 mm, glandular-puberulous all over back, often with acute hairs as well, c. 0.2-0.4 mm long. Pedicel (lowermost) 0.8-2 mm long. Calyx 3-4.4 mm long, subequally 5-toothed, deeply split on anticous side, minutely glandular-puberulous all over, often with acute hairs as well, 0.2-0.8 mm long. Corolla tube 5-9 mm long, narrowly funnel-shaped, limb c. 4.8-8 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 2-3.2 x 1-2.4 mm, anticous lobes 2-3.5 x 1.1-2.5 mm, all lobes broadly elliptic, white to pale violet, tube often flushed purplish, minutely glandular outside. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2.8 mm long, anthers in mouth; anticous filaments 2-3.4 mm long, anthers very shortly exerted. Stigma and style c. 6.7-11.5 mm long, style minutely puberulous. Ovary 0.8-1 x 0.4-0.6 mm. Cocci 2.5-3 x 0.8-1 mm, ± oblong, somewhat rugulose in lower part, light brown.
