Species

Angiosperms > Lamiales > Scrophulariaceae > Selago

Characteristics

Suffrutex or dwarf shrublet, full height unknown, but at least 800 mm, stoutest stem seen 7 mm in diam., sparingly virgately branched, branches long, pubescent all round, hairs up to c. 0.15 mm long, retrorse, sometimes with longer (up to 0.3-0.8 mm) somewhat spreading hairs as well, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, soon alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 5.5-16 x 2.5-7 mm, axillary leaves similar, subrotund, broadly elliptic or broadly spathulate, apex rounded to subacute, base abruptly contracted, subpetiolate, margins entire, very slightly thickened, texture thin, midrib often slightly raised on lower surface, channelled on upper, sometimes invisible, glandular-punctate, usually with rather coarse hairs up to 0.1-0.15 mm long on margins, these sometimes wanting. Inflorescence a compact corymbose panicle, sometimes compounded, individual spikes many-flowered, crowded, sometimes becoming lax in fruit, lowermost peduncles c. 10-30 mm long, nude or nearly so. Bract adnate to ± half calyx tube, lowermost 2.2-3.4 x 1.2-2 mm, boat-shaped, concave, obtuse to subacute, hairs c. 0.1 mm long on margins, sometimes a few on keel. Pedicel wanting. Calyx 1.7-2.2 mm long, usually 3-lobed roughly halfway to base, anticolateral lobes almost as broad as long, sometimes bifid, each lobe served by a vascular strand, hairs to c. 0.15 mm on margins and outside mostly on posticous side, minute globular glands as well, inside very minute globular glands. Corolla tube 3.5-6 mm long, funnel-shaped, limb 4.5-6.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.6-2 x 1-1.7 mm, anticous lobe 2.2-2.8 x 1.1-1.8 mm, all lobes elliptic, white or sometimes mauve. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.5-2 mm long, anthers in mouth or shortly exerted, anticous filaments 2-2.8 mm long, anthers well exerted. Stigma and stylec. 5.5-7.5 mm long, style puberulous. Ovary c. 0.8 x 0.4 mm, a few globular glands at apex. Cocci c. 2-3 x 1-1.5 mm, dark brown, rugulose. Plants possibly flower in any month.
