Characteristics

Dwarf shrublet, stems many tufted from crown of a stout woody taproot, crown up to c. 20 mm in diam., stems 100-500 mm long, simple or loosely virgately branched, usually stiffly erect, puberulous, hairs c. 0.1-0.15 mm long, patent or slightly recurved, sometimes varnished by oozing sunken glands, closely leafy. leaves alternate, fascicled, largest primary leaves 1.5-5(-10) x 0.4-1 mm, oblong or oblong-lanceolate, apex obtuse or subobtuse, bluntly apiculate, base broad, half-clasping, margins entire, plane, texture thick, midrib raised on lower surface at least near base, invisible on upper, hairs up to c. 0.1 mm on margins at base, fewer and often shorter upwards, less than 0.1 mm long on midline on lower surface, or sometimes glabrous, glandular-punctate as well, oozing (juvenile leaves may show varying degrees of hairiness: see comments below); axillary leaves similar, but may differ in details of indumentum. Inflorescence usually composed of crowded spikes c. 3 x 3 mm in first flower elongating to c. 10-20 mm in fruit, arranged in long narrow crowded terminal panicles, often simple with very short peduncles (c. 3 mm) or sometimes lower peduncles themselves narrowly panicled (as in type), or sometimes peduncles much longer and they or simple panicles subcorymbosely arranged; exceptionally spikes lax, up to c. 80 mm long, flowers distant, either panicled or subcorymbosely arranged. Bract adnate to calyx tube, lowermost 1.4-2.1 x 0.7-1.1 mm, ovate or ovate-lanceolate, more or less acute, concave, hairs up to 0.1-0.3 mm long on margins, sometimes few to 0.1-0-.2 mm long on keel, back always clad in globular glands, glandular-punctate as well, often oozing. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 1.1-1.3 mm long, either obliquely 3-lobed or 2-lobed by abortion of posticous lobe, or very rarely irregularly 3-5-lobed, anticolateral lobes 0.9-1.2 x 0.8-1 mm, broadly deltoid, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm long on margins, outside globular glands, sometimes with acute hairs as well to 0.1 mm long, mainly on posticous side, keel prominent, glandular-punctate, often oozing. Corolla tube 1.4-1.8 mm long (smaller when flowers female), broadly funnel-shaped, limb 2-2.8 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 0.7-1 x 0.4-0.6 mm, or lip entire, anticous lobe 1.1-1.5 x 0.7-1 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, usually white, mauve recorded in 3025 CA, 3026 CA, 3124 DD and 3221 BA quarter degree squares but not necessarily to the exclusion of white flowers. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-2.3 mm long, anticous filaments 1.3-2.5 mm, all anthers well exerted (except in female flowers). Stigma and style 1.5-2.5 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.4 x 0.3 mm. Cocci 1-1.5 x 0.7-1.1 mm, yellow-to red-brown, smooth. Flowering between December and June, but mostly January to March.
