Characteristics

Perennial herb eventually forming a virgately branched bushy shrublet c. 150-400 mm tall but will flower as a simple-stemmed seedling 50 mm tall, stems erect or decumbent, clad in coarse more or less recurved hairs up to 0.25-0.5 mm long (often short strongly recurved hairs mixed with scattered longer hairs), closely leafy. Leaves fascicled at least on upper parts of stems, brachyblasts sometimes wanting on lower parts, opposite soon becoming alternate upwards, largest primary leaves 5.5-9(-12) x 1-1.3 mm, oblong-lanceolate to narrowly elliptic, apex subacute, base slightly narrowed, margins entire, thickened, slightly revolute, texture thick, venation invisible, glandular-punctate, coarse broad-based hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long mainly on margins, sometimes few on lower surface (when hairs few on primary leaves, axillary leaves may be glabrous). Inflorescence a crowded spike up to c. 30-50 x 7-8 mm in fruit, usually several in a short compact terminal corymbose panicle, occasionally, on the same plant, small solitary spikes terminating twiglets. Bract adnate to whole of calyx tube, lowermost 3.2-5.5 x 0.6-1.1 mm, lanceolate, thick, inner surface plane, coarse hairs up to 0.3-0.6 mm long on margins and backs. Pedicels wanting. Calyx 2.2-3 mm long, campanulate, subequally 5-lobed at least halfway to base, lobes narrowly triangular, very acute, acute hairs up to 0.25-0.5 mm long on margins and outer surface, minute globular glands as well. Corolla tube 4-5 mm long,' funnel-shaped, often with some minute scattered glands, limb 3.2-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1-1.8 x 0.8-1.1 mm, anticous lobe 1.3-2.5 x 0.8-1.2 mm, all lobes oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 0.8-1.1 mm long, anthers in mouth; anticous filaments 1-1.7 mm long, anthers very shortly exerted. Stigma and style 4-5.5 mm long, style pubescent. Ovary c. 0.7 x 0.5 mm. Cocci c. 1.5-2 x 1-1.3 mm, red-brown, very slightly rugulose.
