Characteristics

Dwarf rounded shrublet c. 150-500 mm tall, very woody and twiggy (recorded as much browsed), persistent inflorescence axes eventually nude and supspinescent, young parts pubescent, hairs c. 0.1 mm long, retrorse, appressed, closely leafy. Leaves opposite, tardily alternate upwards, fascicled, largest primary leaves 3-12 x 1.5-2.5 mm, elliptic, obovate or oblanceolate, apex obtuse, base narrowed then abruptly expanded and half-clasping, margins entire, thickened (revolute), texture rather thick, midrib slightly raised on lower surface, glandular-punctate, hairs mainly at base, there minute or up to c. 0.2 mm long, most of leaf glabrous or very nearly so (a few very minute scattered hairs); axillary leaves similar. Inflorescence composed of glomerules c. 5-7 x 5-7 mm, either sessile or on short (c. 3-10 mm) leafy peduncles, arranged in very narrow terminal panicles c. 30-120 mm long (or abbreviated in much dwarfed specimens), the panicles themselves occasionally panicled. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost 2.3-3 x 1.1-1.8 mm, elliptic, obtuse or subobtuse, base concave, hairs up to 0.1-0.2 mm long on margins, very minutely pubertdous on upper half of inner face, few very minute hairs on back. Pedicel up to 0.1-0.3 mm long. Calyx 1.7-2 mm long, obliquely campanulate, 5-lobed halfway to base, 2 anticous lobes much broader than other 3, all deltoid, ± obtuse, hairs up to c. 0.15 mm long on margins, scattered hooked hairs c. 0.1 mm long outside together with minute globular glands. Corolla tube 2.8-3.8 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3.5-5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lip 1.2-1.7 x 1.1-2 mm, entire or shallowly lobed, anticous; lobe 2-2.3 x 1.1-1.5 mm (all parts smaller when flowers 2), all lobes elliptic-oblong, shades of mauve. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.7-2.2 mm long, anticous filaments 2-3.2 mm, all anthers well exerted (except in 2 flowers). Stigma and style c. 2.8-4 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.5 x 0.4 mm. Cocci not seen.
