Characteristics

Perennial herb c. 0.3-1 m tall, stem erect, stout (up to c. 5 mm diam.), rodlike, simple or sparingly branched, pubescent, hairs up to 0.2-0.5 mm long, strongly recurved, closely leafy. Leaves fascicled, alternate, primary leaves 4-12 x 0.6-1 mm, linear-lanceolate, apex acute or subacute, base scarcely narrowed, margins entire, midrib prominent below, channelled above, glandular-punctate, hairs up to 0.2-0.3 mm on margins and midrib on lower surface, on secondary leaves hairs may be few or wanting. Inflorescence a. compact terminal corymb c. 30-130 mm in diam. Bract adnate to pedicel and calyx tube, lowermost 2.2-3 x 0.8-1.1 mm, blade elliptic, lanceolate, acute, deeply concave and embracing calyx, strongly keeled with pale membranous margins, hairs to 0.2-0.3 mm long on margins and sometimes keel as well. Pedicel 0-0.3 mm long. Calyx 1.8-2.2 mm long, campanulate, posticous lobe small, acute, the two anticolateral lobes much longer and broader, sometimes entire, mostly irregularly bifid, hairs c. 0.1-0.15 mm long on margins and keels. Corolla tube 1.5-2 mm long, broadly funnel-shaped, limb 3.5-4.5 mm across lateral lobes, posticous lobes 1.2-1.7 x 0.7-1 mm, anticous lobe 1.7-2.1 x 0.9-1.1 mm, all lobes ± oblong-elliptic, white. Stamens: posticous filaments 1.2-2 mm long, anticous filaments 1.8-2.4 mm, all anthers well exerted. Stigma and style 2-3 mm long, style glabrous. Ovary c. 0.7-0.8 x 0.4-0.7 mm. Cocci 1.5-1.8 x 0.8 mm, dark brown, rugulose. Flowers can possibly be found in any month.

Bracts: basal ones up to 3 x 1.1 mm, elliptic, lanceolate, acute, pubescent on margins and sometimes keel. Calyx irregularly 3-5-lobed, anticous lobes much longer and broader than posticous one and often unevenly bifid. Corolla white. Flowering time all year.
Like S. corymbosa but major bracts larger, acute, 0.8-1.1 mm wide (vs. 0.4-0.7 mm) and calyx acutely and irregularly 3-5-lobed.
