Characteristics

Perennial herb, flowering stem up to 1 m tall, solitary, simple, leafy in the lower part, bracteate in the upper, stem, leaves and base of involucre thinly white woolly-cobwebby at first, wool often persisting in wisps only at the nodes and at the base of the involucre. Leaves mostly radical, linear to lanceolate, up to 16 x 1 cm, apex acute or subacute, base tapering to a long narrow petiole one third to half the total leaf length, expanded and half-clasping below, margins obscurely; or distinctly, minutely and closely callose-crenulate, stem leaves like the radical but soon sessile and passing into remote, lanceolate, half-clasping bracts. Heads discoid, c. 8 x 10 mm, c. 30-flowered, 3-12 on long peduncles corymbosely arranged. Involucre campanulate, bracts c. 12, oblong, acute, 6 mm long, shorter than the flowers, keel thickened, resinous, glabrous except for an apical tuft of hairs and, occasionally, wisps of wool, calyculus bracts few, small, appressed, all tinged purple. Corolla 5.5 mm long, dull purple, each lobe with a median resinous line running to the base of the tube. Ovary 1.5 mm long, hirsute. Achenes not seen.
