Characteristics

Tufted perennial herb with a stout branching rhizomatous stock crowned with several leaf rosettes, flowering stems up to c. 25 cm high, glandular-pubescent, closely leafy. Radical leaves up to c. 7 x 1 cm, approx. half the length petiolar, oblanceolate in outline, blade deeply pinnately lobed, lobes decreasing in size downwards, deltoid or oblong-ovate, acute, the larger ones with a coarse tooth on the lower margin, sinuses broad, rounded, both surfaces coarsely glandular-pubescent, upper more densely so than lower, cauline leaves smaller, becoming smaller and less deeply cut upwards, passing into entire, linear-lanceolate inflorescence, bracts. Heads discoid, solitary on long minutely bracteate peduncles in the upper leaf axils forming a few-headed corymbose panicle. Involucre campanulate, bracts 10-12, (5.5-)7 mm long, a little shorter than the disc, glandular-pubescent, calyculus bracts few, very small. Flowers purple or red-purple. Achenes c. 3 mm long, cylindric, closely ribbed, white hispid.
