Characteristics

A perennial herb, stems, leaves, pedicels and involucral bracts all clothed in long, soft, shaggy, gland-tipped hairs, sometimes purple-coloured. Flowering stems up to 30 cm tall, several from the crown, slightly decumbent at the base, then erect, mostly simple, rarely forking, closely leafy. Radical leaves rosetted, up to 7 x 2 cm, elliptic or spathulate, narrowed to a broad, flat, petiole-like base, margins more or less entire or repand-toothed; cauline leaves ascending, mostly narrowly oblong, apex more or less obtuse, base subcordate, clasping, margins denticulate. Heads discoid, narrowly campanulate, c. 12 x 10 mm across the flattened pappus, arranged in congested racemose panicles. Involucral bracts c. 14-22, c. 10 mm long, calyculus bracts very few, short. Flowers whitish, yellowish, purple or blue. Achenes cylindric, hairy.
