Rhizomatous herb, rhizomes slender (2-4 mm diam.) branched, young parts often purplish, closely leafy towards the tips, the leaves appearing rosetted, flowering stems terminal, solitary, simple, erect to c. 20 cm, thinly pilose with soft spreading hairs, leafy in the lower part, bracteate upwards. Radical leaves up to 6.5 x 0.5 cm, blade oblong-elliptic, apex subacute, tapering to a flat, petiole-like base accounting for about half the total leaf length, expanded and clasping below, margins of blade somewhat thickened, subrevolute, serrulate to sharply subpinnatifid, both surfaces thinly hairy at first, glabrescent, clasping base with ciliate margins, sometimes loosely cottony, cauline leaves similar but petiolar region less well defined, soon passing upwards into lanceolate-acuminate bracts with ciliate margins. Heads radiate, solitary at the branch tips. Involucre narrowly campanulate, bracts c. 18-22, 9-10 mm long, about equalling the disc, thinly hairy, hairs long, spreading, calyculus bracts c. 2-6, lanceolate, margins ciliate. Rays c. 13, long and spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes c. 3.5 mm long, cylindric, closely ribbed, white-hispid between the ribs.
