Characteristics

A nearly glabrous perennial herb with a stout woody stock, flowering stems 1 or few from the crown, erect to c. 60 cm, branching low down or from about the middle to carry the heads in an open corymbose panicle, lower part of stem glabrous or nearly so, inflorescence branches more or less glandular. Leaves closely set on the lower part of the stem becoming distant in the upper half and soon passing into bracts, up to 11 x 3 cm, narrowly or broadly elliptic tapering to a narrow, flat, winged, petiole-like clasping base; smaller, oblong to linear, broad-based and ear-clasping upwards; margins callose dentate or denticulate, somewhat leathery, both surfaces glabrous or very nearly so. Heads discoid, campanulate, 10-12 x 12-15 mm, few to many corymbosely arranged. Involucral bracts c. 14-18, (5.5-)6-7 mm long, glandular-pilose, calyculus bracts c. 3-5, small. Flowers purple. Achenes glabrous or minutely and sparsely hispid between the ribs.
