Characteristics

Rhizomatous perennial herb c. 25-70 cm high, flowering stem simple below the inflorescence, glabrous, leafy. Radical leaves up to 20 x 1(-2) cm, oblong or lanceolate-oblong, apex acute, base broad, clasping, membranous, margins more or less entire to callose-denticulate, glabrous or thinly hairy, particularly on the upper surface and midrib below, lower stem leaves similar, smaller and more distant upwards then lanceolate, acuminate, passing into inflorescence bracts, base more or less cordate-clasping. Heads radiate, solitary or up to 5 on long peduncles corymbosely arranged. Involucre broadly campanulate, bracts c. 20, 11-14 mm long, about equalling the disc, calyculus bracts few, lanceolate, acuminate, about equalling the involucre, margins often with long white multicellular hairs, involucre also sometimes hairy. Rays 13-19, long, spreading, they and the disc bright yellow. Achenes c. 6-8 mm long, cylindric, ribbed, glabrous or sparsely hispidulous.
